Can you provide a ballpark cost estimate?
Not really. A ballpark quote is really just a guess that will often create more questions than it answers. If a ballpark quote is too high, it could discourage you from exploring options or going ahead with the work. If the ballpark is too low, there is the potential disappointment once a true estimate is generated.

What are my payment options?
Payment depends on the scope of your project. As the business owner, James can negotiate a plan that makes sense for the customer and the builders. There is typically some deposit required at the start of job, and complete payment when the work is finished.

On larger jobs, payments are broken down into phases. They are typically, a first payment as a deposit, the second is when the city makes the first inspections, third is at substantial completion, and final payment is due at final completion. Smaller jobs are either broken in to two payments (deposit and final completion), or payable upon completion.

Do we need an architect or a designer?
It depends. Most remodeling projects require some design work and almost all will require a drawing to present to the municipal authorities. If the work does not entail obtaining a permit, then no design or drafting is required. Cosmetic changes can often be done without involving a designer and energy conservation services requires no design work.

How long does it take to go through the design process?
It can take up to a month or more for a major remodel. The time frame is greatly reduced if we are producing only a drawing (floor plan and one elevation) for the municipality. Structural changes require designs from a structural engineer or an architect.

What is the difference between a residential designer and an architect?
A residential designer is a design professional who assists in the overall design by helping the consumer choose products to go into the home and will create plans and elevations of the remodel project. An engineer or architect may be required to approve the drawings if there are structural elements that need to be altered.

An architect (or engineer) is typically used in most commercial remodels and will sometimes be involved in the residential remodel, depending on the residential project's scope.

The final plans are submitted to the municipality to obtain permits, assist the trades people in estimating (and building) their part of the project, and define graphically what is to be built for the owner's approval.

Does James do the work himself?
No. He has dedicated and loyal employees and subcontractors who perform the work. James' role is in sales and estimating, employee management, strategic planning, quality control and customer relations.

Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Westring Construction includes a 1-year warranty on the work performed. At Westring Construction, we stand behind our quality workmanship on every project. We will be here at project completion and beyond to address any questions or concerns.


Energy Conservation Services

Is an energy audit required for energy conservation work?
No, but we recommend a professional audit to gather the data describing the current condition of your home before investing in energy conservation work. When the work is finished, we will test again to ensure that we have met or exceeded the report's objectives.

What is a Qualified Consultant?
A qualified consultant with the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program performs an energy evaluation for the homeowner and based on their recommendations, provide suggested allied contractors to do the work. After the work is done, the consultant returns to independently verify that the work was done correctly and to program standards.

What is an Allied Contractor?
An Allied Contractor signs an agreement with the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program that they will perform their services to meet the program's standards. Often, program staff or the consultant will educate them if some of their standard practices have to be tweaked.

Westring Construction is an Allied Contractor.

Can I get a rebate from the state?
Yes, provided that your improvements meet the goals documented in the energy audit report.

Can you just add insulation to my attic or walls?
I can, but I don't just insulate attics or walls. Indoor air quality and comfort depends on other factors such as air infiltration and ventilation. Although you may have inadequate insulation, drafts and big energy bills are more commonly due to heat loss by air infiltration. We go beyond just adding insulation. We seal all accessible openings including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing penetrations.

Do I need mechanical ventilation if I tighten up my house?
Houses need to "breath" to prevent moisture accumulation. Mold, mildew, and condensation forming on the windows are the result of a well sealed and insulated home. Exhaust fans in the bath and kitchen are a good start, but sometimes additional ventilation may be necessary. We install Heat Recovery Ventilators that let your house "breathe" while conserving energy.

Can I do some of the work?
Yes. You may do as much or as little as you want or are able to do.

Can I get a rebate if I do the work myself?
Yes, if you meet the minimum requirements outlined in the energy audit report. This will be verified by the Qualified Consultant at the post-test phase.
